Congressman
Ronald V. Dellums was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives
from California's 9th District from 1971 through 1998. For almost
30 years of a distinguished career in public service he was a
leader in the Congress.
He was the
Ranking Democrat and member on the House National Security Committee
and member of the Military Procurement Subcommittee from 1995-98.
He served as chairman of the Armed Services Committee in 1993-94
and was a member of the committee from 1973-94. He was chairman
of the Military Acquisition Subcommittee in 1993-95. He served
as chairman of the Military Installation and Facilities Subcommittee
from 1987-89. He was chairman of the Research and Development
Subcommittee 1989-92 and a member of the Defense Policy Panel,
1987-89 and the House Investigations Subcommittee 1987-90. During
his formative years in Congress he served on the House Committee
on the District of Columbia and as chairman from 1979-93; Education
Subcommittee, Fiscal and Government Affairs Subcommittee and as
a member of the Judiciary Affars and Education Subcommittee.
Other service
included membership on the House Permanent Select Committee on
Intelligence 1991-92; Member of the North Atlantic Assembly 1987-94;
National Capital Planning Commission 1983-92; Post Office and
Civil Service Committee 1981-83; The Pike Commission on Intelligence
1975-76; and Foreign Affairs Committee 1971-72.
He also served
on the Berkeley, California, City Council from 1967-71.
During his
years of service he gained many appointments and provided notable
service as: Member Advisory Committee MIC Industries, 2001-Present;
Vice Chairman United States-South America Business Council 2001-Present;
Board of Trustees Public Health Policy Advisory Board 2001-Present;
member Eminent Persons Panel on HIV/AIDS; member President's Advisory
Council on HIV/AIDS, 2000-2002; Chairman Board of Directors for
Constituency for Africa, 1999-Present; member Board of Directors
AIDS Action, 1999-Present; member Panetta Institute, 1998-Present;
Distinguished Chair, Department of Peace and Conflict Resolution,
University of California, Berkeley; lifetime member National Association
of Social Workers, NAACP and Alpha Phi Alpha.
Among the
honors in his public career are included the David R. Brower,
Ronald V. Dellums Institute for Sustainable Policy Studies at
Merritt College, Oakland, CA; Federal Building in Oakland, CA
dedicated 2000; Ronald V. Dellums Building, Chabot Science Center
and Observatory dedicated 2000; African-American Museum and Library
at Oakland, archives of career established 1999; Distinguished
Alumni, Hall of Fame, San Francisco State University 1996.
The Congressman
is a distinguished author with major publications including "Lying
Down With the Lions; "Defense Sense"; The Dellums Hearings"

U.S. Defense and Foreign Policy Formulation," , "Peace

Dellums received
a B.A. from San Francisco State College in 1960 and a M.S.W from
the University of California in 1962. He holds honorary doctorates
from Medical University of Southern Africa 2001, California State
University 2000, Clark Atlanta University 1999 and Wilberforce
University 1975. He is also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
