Congressman Bill Dickinson

Congressman Bill Dickinson represented southeast Alabama in the U.S. House for 28 years. As a senior Republican in Congress, he was elected by his colleagues to serve for twelve years as the Ranking Republican on the powerful House Armed Services Committee.

Congressman Dickinson exercised great responsibility in shaping national defense policy. He served as Ranking Republican on the Subcommittee of Procurement & Military Systems and on the Subcommittee of Military Installations & Facilities. Congressman Dickinson's strong support for Army aviation programs over the years won him the nickname as the "Father of Army Aviation." Credited by Army experts for the creation of a separate Aviation department within the Department of the Army. His strong support also helped to bring about the successful Apache Attack Helicopter program.

Congressman Dickinson's voting record earned him numerous awards. The American Conservation Union presented him its highest honor: the Statesman Award. He is the recipient of the Army Aviation Association of America's Congressional Appreciation Award for his leadership role on behalf of Army Aviation. The Association of the U.S. Army presented Congressman Dickinson with its Distinguished Service to Soldiers Award.

From 1952-54, he served as an Opelika City Court Judge. Congressman Dickinson was elevated to Lee County Court Judge (1954-58), and later to Alabama Circuit Court Judge from 1958-62. After leaving the bench, he worked as an executive with the Southern Railway System for two years. Before being elected to Congress, he served on the Opelika Board of Education from 1954-1962.

Congressman Dickinson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and later served as a Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He earned his J.D. degree from the University of Alabama Law School in 1950.
