Congressman
Howard Pollock was the first Republican ever elected to the U.S.
House of Representatives from Alaska. While serving in Congress,
he was an active member of the Merchant Marine & Fisheries
Committee and Interior & Insular Affairs Committee. Congressman
Pollock established a reputation in Congress as a advocate for
the sportsman and the protection of wildlife.
Before
serving in the House, Congressman Pollock was Chairman of the
Statehood Committee in the Alaska Territorial House in the 1950s.
He subsequently served in the 1960s as the State Senate Republican
Whip. Congressman Pollock also was a member of the Alaska Republican
State Central Committee for six years. He also served as a U.S.
Navy officer during World War II and as the president of oil,
mineral and seafood corporations in Alaska. In 1970, he was a
candidate for Alaska Governor.
Congressman
Pollock was appointed by President Nixon as the first Deputy Administrator
of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
with 4-star equivalent rank of Admiral over the NOAA Uniformed
Corps. Congressman Pollock later served on the U.S. Delegation
to United Nations Law of the Sea Conference.
As an international
diplomat representing the United States for 12 years to the United
Nations Law of the Sea Conference, Congressman Pollock served
on various official missions to Angola, Costa Rica, Egypt, Ethiopia,
France, Formosa, India, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Micronesia, Namibia,
Nepal, Soviet Union/Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland,
Thailand, UK, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
As a sportsman,
Congressman Pollock was honored to have served on many boards
on the international level. He was elected President for a term
of the National Rifle Association (NRA). He was also the Director-at-Large
for Ducks Unlimited, International Director-at-Large & Parliamentarian
for Safari Club International, President of the United Nations
Underwater Explorers Society, and president of nine different
honor and sports organizations.
Congressman
Pollock holds a Masters Degree in Industrial Management from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a law degree from
the University of Houston. He was twice a recipient of the George
Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley
Forge; is a life member of the NRA Executive Council and a member
of the NRA's Legion of Honor.
